Sakura

Sakura is the Japanese cherry blossom, and in Japan it's more than a tree: it's a season, a ritual and a flavour of its own.

Hanami

Every spring people gather under the blossoms for hanami, flower viewing, a tradition that goes back over a thousand years to Japan's Heian court. The blossoms only last a week or two, which is exactly the point.

The flavour

In Japan sakura is something you eat and drink too: salt-pickled blossoms in tea, cherry leaves wrapped around sakura mochi. That soft, almond-like perfume comes from coumarin in the leaves.

Our take

Cherry first, with a floral edge. Short-lived blossom, long-lasting can.
